Copland: "Music for the Theater" John Harbison: Symphony No. 4 "Tragic" Timothy Andres: Concertino for violin/viola and Orchestra (world premiere) Owen Dalby, Violin/Viola Haydn: Symphony 82, "The Bear" John Harbison is one of America's leading composers. Not only has his music been played frequently by all of Americas leading orchestras (especially the Boston Symphony), but he has had a long, extremely productive with the Albany Symphony and Music Director David Alan Miller. The orchestra has performed many of his major works and has made two CDs of his music on the Albany Records label. Thus, it is fitting that he serve as the orchestras first Mellon-funded "Composer-Mentor." In that role, he will be featured on two of the orchestras subscription concerts and the orchestra will produce a CD of two of his major works. In addition, he will act as curator of this concert. The program features a major, little-known symphony by Harbison, No. 4 "Tragic." This work was written during a very difficult time in Harbisons life, when one of his closest relatives was facing a life-threatening medical diagnosis. Harbison eloquently expressed his pain and awareness of the fragility of life in the slow movement of this symphony. In addition to the symphony, Harbison has invited a young composer who worked with him at Tanglewood, Timothy Andres, to contribute a new "debut composer" work to the program. Timo is creating a Concertino for a brilliant young violinist and violist, Owen Dalby, which will feature Dalby playing both violin and viola (a double concerto for one player, if you will). Also on the program, two exquisite works by major composers closest to Harbisons heart, Coplands sizzling, jazzy early work, "Music for the Theater," and a glorious symphony Haydn wrote for his Paris audience, Symphony No. 82, "The Bear."
