Albany River Rats

The Albany River Rats were originally founded as the Capital District Islanders and played at the RPI campus during the 1990 year. The Capital District Islanders were a team in the American Hockey League based in Troy, New York. The Islanders were the principal minor league affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders during the 90-91, 91-92 and 92-93 seasons. They changed the name when the New Jersey Devils sold their affiliate (the Utica Devils) to become the Albany River Rats. They play within the East Division in the Eastern Conference of the American Hockey League (AHL)

The Albany River Rats play at the Times Union Center. Their cheerleaders are the Ice Mice and the mascot is Rowdy. They compete for the Calder Cup every season.

Many of the past Albany River Rats moved on to the NHL and had successful careers.

They won the Calder Cup in 1995
